What Makes a Sudoku Puzzle "Evil"?
Evil is the label many Sudoku sites use for their hardest puzzles. You might also see it called expert, extreme, fiendish, or diabolical — they all describe the same tier. On VeryFreeSudoku, our evil and expert printables use the same generator at the highest difficulty setting.
What sets evil puzzles apart is the clue count. With only 20 to 24 given numbers, nearly two-thirds of the grid is empty when you start. Basic scanning will fill a handful of cells at best, and then you are into advanced territory: candidate elimination, pattern matching, and chain reasoning.
Techniques You Will Need
Evil puzzles are where intermediate techniques stop being optional. You will rely heavily on pencil marks and need to be comfortable with several strategies:
Naked pairs and hidden pairs eliminate candidates by locking two numbers into two cells. These are the first techniques to look for after basic singles stall.
Hidden singles and pointing pairs narrow down where numbers can live within a box, row, or column. They are less obvious than naked singles but just as powerful.
X-Wing is a row-column pattern that eliminates candidates across the grid. It appears in most evil puzzles and is essential to learn.
Some grids also require swordfish (the 3×3 cousin of X-Wing), XY-Wing, or forcing chains. If you want to build up to these, our tips page has a structured practice plan.
How to Approach an Evil Puzzle
Start the same way you would any puzzle: scan for naked and hidden singles. On an evil grid, this might only fill 5 to 10 cells. Do not worry — that is normal.
Next, fill in pencil marks for the remaining cells. Be thorough here. Evil puzzles punish incomplete candidate tracking. Once your marks are in, scan for pairs, pointing pairs, and box-line reductions before moving to X-Wing and beyond.
If you get stuck, step away. Evil puzzles are marathons, not sprints. Coming back with fresh eyes often reveals a pattern you missed. Our online Deluxe Player on Expert difficulty has hints (up to 3 per puzzle) and a mistake toggle to help you practice without getting permanently stuck.
Evil vs. Expert: Is There a Difference?
On VeryFreeSudoku, evil and expert are the same difficulty. We generate both labels from the same algorithm at the same clue-count range. Some other sites draw a distinction — making "evil" slightly harder than "expert" — but there is no universal standard. What matters is the clue count and which techniques the puzzle requires, and ours are at the top end of the scale.
If you are looking for expert-labeled printables specifically, the expert printables page has identical puzzles with that label.
Printing Tips for Evil Puzzles
Evil puzzles demand heavy pencil-mark use, so consider printing in large print mode (one puzzle per page) to give yourself room to write candidates by hand. Use a mechanical pencil with a good eraser — you will be updating marks constantly as you eliminate.
For best results, set your printer to 100% scale with minimal margins. See our printables hub for more printer settings advice.
